It is said in life surprises never end. As the recipient of “The Bob Armstrong (WA4SQL) HAM of The Year award” for outstanding service I am both humbled and honoured to have been selected for this honor. I know many of you did not know Bob. To those of us who knew him and worked with him, Bob was “The MAN”. If Bob said he was going to do something, there was never a need to question or doubt that what ever he promised would be done and to the best of his ability. His great example and his leadership inspired all of us to make public service a duty. Bob was an honest man and possessed the highest degree of integrity.

All of the CARS candidates for this award possess these same qualities. Why you picked me is a mystery!!!! Receiving this award makes me feel that Bob’s modeling and mentoring/Elmering of myself and others has certainly enhanced us and our organization.

It was my honor to serve as president of CARS twice; to coordinate Spring Fest twice; to coordinate the Tour de Cure as Situation Course Manager at least six (6) or seven (7) times, and to author Bob’s ARES / RACES Plans. To participate in all of Bob’s planned and unplanned activities, including helping him with is ham shack was a delight for me and everyone else who participated. Whether you realise it or not in some way, when we help others — Bob is smiling because his life was full of giving and helping others. We
are carrying on his fine tradition by improving ourselves, mentoring others, and enriching our organization and community.

Again I thank everyone for this honor. I also challenge everyone to do their part to carry on Bob’s work.

God Bless
R
