What is amateur radio? First and foremost, it is a hobby. It is something you do not as a job or a necessity of life but as an activity you do for enjoyment and relaxation. It is a hobby that opens up the world of wireless communications. Through this world you will not only be able to communicate with

your neighbor using a radio but also:

• Extend your range of communication to the Hampton Roads area using repeaters

• Extend your range to places like Texas, Pennsylvania, Mexico, or Canada using an amateur radio satellite system

• Extend your range to the ultimate worldwide communication using high frequency (HF) transmissions

• Support your local Emergency Operations Center (EOC) with backup communications during times of need such as hurricanes, tornadoes, or floods

• Add a computer and an audio sound card interface to transmit and receive digital messages

• Hone your direction finding (search and rescue) capabilities by adding a transmitter and engaging in a “Fox Hunting” exercise

• Make your smart phone a worldwide communications device through the use of the Echo Link application

• Use Slow Scan TV to transmit pictures

• Use the Automated Position Reporting System (APRS), a GPS type technology, to track objects such as model rockets, high-altitude balloons, or your significant other.

• Learn alternate ways to power your system such as batteries, generators, or solar panels

• Provide civic service communications during fun runs, Tour de Cure, or other community events

• Use Earth-Moon-Earth bounce transmissions to make a contact

• And even communicate with our astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS) Just to name a few capabilities. The ability to learn and perform all or even some of these capabilities takes time. Amateur radio, like other hobbies, is developed over time and at your pace. So, let’s take a look at a few things that can help you prepare for your hobby.
